PENUMBRA

FOR SOLO EUPHONIUM AND ORCHESTRA

Euphoniumist Tom Mahovsky of the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West commissioned composer Stephen Barr to write a new work: a single-movement, concerto-style work for euphonium and symphonic ensemble.  Tom requested a slow to medium tempo piece in a lyrical style, approximately 8-10 minutes in length. Two versions will be written: one for euphonium and orchestra, and one for euphonium and wind ensemble.  A reduction for euphonium and piano will also be prepared.

The piece premiered on February 3, 2018 by the Butler County Symphony Orchestra, and is scheduled for a Fall 2018 performance by the Slippery Rock University Wind Ensemble.  Copies of the score and parts will be mailed to the consortium members after the completion of the premiere and any necessary edits are made; after which all contributing members will have first rights to regional premiere performances.

As leaders of the consortium, the Butler County Symphony Orchestra and the SRU Wind Ensemble will have the exclusive right for a year to make the first professional recordings.
