Former student and Slippery Rock University alumnus, Tom Mahovsky, along with the Butler County Symphony orchestra and director Matthew Kraemer, have commissioned a one-movement concerto-like work for euphonium with symphonic accompaniment.

Two versions of the new work, Penumbra, will be created: a version for euphonium and orchestra, and a version for euphonium and wind ensemble.

Premiere of "Monuments of the West"

Kathy Melago premiered Monuments of the West, a set of images inspired by National Parks of the western United States, in a recital on the campus of Slippery Rock University.  Composed for flute and tuba-euphonium quartet, Kathy was accompanied by Travis Scott and Jonathan Helmick on euphonium, and Mike Zech and Devon Klass on tuba.

Both Kathy Melago and Jonathan Helmick are members of the music department faculty at SRU.  Mike Zech is an alumnus of the program, and Devon Klaas is currently a music education major in his junior year at The Rock.
